We saw in The light of Darkness Part 1 how the devil masquerades as what he is not. Darkness masquerading as light, death as life, lies as truth. The sun is the center of our solar system and its light and heat sustains life on the earth. Given the role the natural sun plays, one can easily digest the concept that the sun is a symbol of God:

For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

Psalm 84:11 KJV

But even in this, the devil masquerades i.e. he presents himself as a source of light (a sun):

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

2 Corinthians 11:14 KJV

But because he’s a masquerader, his fake light cannot give us what the true light of Jesus gives, i.e truth of God, life of God, love of God, etc

We also saw how Jesus fulfilled God’s promise to protect us from the heat and light of the fake sun:

Promise:

Isaiah 49:10 KJV They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.

Fulfillment:

Revelation 7:16 KJV They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

So God tells us that he will protect us from the from the sun, now, let’s examine how. The way scripture expresses this is by saying “the sun will be darkened”:

For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

Isaiah 13:10 KJV

When God spoke of darkening the sun above, this was language used to convey that the reign of the king of Babylon was going to come to an end. While this addressed the physical king of Babylon, it was also a foreshadowing of how God would bring an end to the reign of the king of spiritual Babylon i.e. the devil. The devil’s sun was darkened.

How do we know for sure that the devil’s light of death was darkened in/by Christ? Several places in the new testament makes this clear:

2 Timothy 1:10 KJV But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

Hebrews 2:14 KJV Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Romans 5:21 KJV That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

The above verses show that death’s reign came/comes to an end in Christ. Said another way, the light of the devil has been darkened. There are many other places where scripture testifies to this. Consider the following:

When Jesus was on the cross, scripture records several events which took place, each of which literally happened but the true significance for us today lies in the meaning behind the event more than the event itself.

When the veil was torn in two in Matt 12:51 this signified that the way into the Holiest of holies was now open to us through the blood of Christ (Heb 9:3 & 10:19).

When Jesus was on the cross, scripture also records that there was darkness i.e. the sun was darkened at the sixth hour (noonday). Just as the vail torn was significant of something God was bringing to past through the cross, so to was the darkness.

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

Matthew 27:45 KJV

It came to past just as God promised:

And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

Amos 8:9 KJV

The physical darkening of the sun was symbolic of the darkening of the spiritual sun that is the devil. When we come to the feet of the cross, the light of darkness that blinded us, is removed

We are given further confirmation that this took place at the time of Jesus, when Peter declared this:

Acts 2:15-16,20 KJV For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

[16] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

[20] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

Peter declared to the people that what they were seeing was the fulfillment of the words of Joel and then quotes what Joel said would come to past, which included the sun being darkened. The Sun of righteousness rose and when he did, the sun of darkness went down.

The sun of righteousness rose in ‘the world’  when God was manifest in flesh, he rises in ‘your world’ when God is manifest in your flesh. This is why Peter declared to the people that they were seeing the fulfillment of Joel’s words. At this point, you maybe wondering what does the Holy Spirit indwelling believers have to do with the sun being darkened?

When the Light of Jesus rises in our hearts, the light of the devil sets. Recall the dream of Joseph:

And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
[10] And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

Genesis 37:9-10 KJV

The man/husband = the sun. Now hear the words of Jesus:

When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
[22] But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

Luke 11:21-22 KJV

A strong man/sun (the devil) was ruler of the house, till a stronger man/sun took the house. The devil was the man of our home, he was our sun (husband) and we were his moon (wife) till Jesus came in. When the Holy Spirit manifest in us, this is where the Sun of Righteousness rises in the heart of a person. And because no man can serve two masters, when the Light of Christ rises in our hearts, the light of Satan decends. This is the concept of a blood moon. This signals the beginning of our walk in the day:

Ephesians 5:14 KJV Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

1 Thessalonians 5:5 KJV Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

Now, when we’re walking in the Light of Christ, we are abiding in “The Day of the Lord”. The day of darkness (the fake light) is over, his reign has come to an end:

Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

1 John 2:8 KJV

Just as Joel prophesied, the sun was/is darkened, and being darkened while Jesus was on the cross shows us that we must come to the cross before we begin our walk in the light/day of the Lord:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come

Joel 2:31 KJV

The cross of Christ darkens the sun, the cross of Christ is the entrance true light for all who all who believe.
