And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.
Psalm 104:15 KJV
Here God continues from verse 14, to describe things “He causes”. He speaks of wine, oil and bread and the impact they have. Let’s examine wine.
God promised to provide wine for his people:
And in this mountain shall the Lord of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.
Isaiah 25:6 KJV
Verse 7 goes on to show that after the wine is received in the mount, then is “the vail” destroyed i.e. the vail that Satan had cast over all nations to blind them (2 Cor 3:14 & 4:4).
And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations.
Isaiah 25:7 KJV
Now consider, before one gets wine, the fruit of the vine has to go through a winepress and get crushed. And this is why scripture speaks of the vine getting crushed in the winepress of God’s wrath (Rev 14:18-20). i.e. The vine (Jesus and those in him) was crushed in the winepress of God’s wrath (on the cross) and the resulting wine, is the best wine saved for last – eternal life in/with Jesus Christ.
The psalmist said that wine makes glad the heart of man, because there is no greater joy, than to be united with our Lord through the cross and hence we sing, as the psalmist did, of the wine that makes us glad:
He (Jesus) has made me glad, he has made me glad. I will rejoice for has made me glad.
