Moses asked God to see His glory (Exo 33:18), God responds
And He said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
Exo 33:20 KJV
From the request of Moses…show me your glory, and the reply of God…. you can’t see my face… glory and face seem to be synonymous.
This is confirmed from Isaiah 6 where the prophet sees God and also in John 12:41 where it states that the prophet saw “His glory”.
Now, in the story of Moses, we are given clues as to why he could (not) see the face of God. Note the second part of God’s answer:
And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
Exodus 33:20 KJV
So, wherever “there” is, it is not a place where one can see God. (See Heb 7:8 how God used “here” and “there”).
In Isaiah 59:2, we are told plainly, that God’s face/glory was hidden from us due to sin. But today, we aren’t “there” where Moses was, we are “here” in Christ (note that Moses was called to stand in a different location… on a rock, before he was shown the glory).
And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
Exodus 33:22 KJV
In Christ, sins have been cleansed:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:7 KJV
Therefore, we can behold the face/glory of God:
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6 KJV
That we can know God’s word, and understand it, through the revelatory power of Jesus… the Spirit that leads us into all truth… is (actually) us beholding the Face of God, through Jesus the Christ.
Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, [24] The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: [25] The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
Numbers 6:23-25 KJV
The shining, gracious face of God, that Aaron blessed his sons with prophetically, was manifested in Jesus.
And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
Matthew 17:2 KJV
May his light rise in all our hearts even as he purges us of all unrighteousness.
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
Malachi 4:2 KJV
