Our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: [4] Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

Psalm 12:3-4 KJVS

There is truth that the tongue has power. God himself said so: Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. – Proverbs 18:21

Therefore, what we say has power behind it. God himself also said, the word is spirit (John 6:63). So, let’s consider how the tongue brings life or death in the spirit.

The tongue brings life or death

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. – James 3:6

That is the tongue of death! A tongue which releases the fire of hell!

And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. – Hebrews 1:7

That is a tongue of life. A tongue that pours out heavenly/Holy Spirit fire.

Now remember, God said in the above proverb concerning the tongue: they that love it, shall eat the fruit thereof. Which fruit? The fruit of their words i.e. Death or Life.

For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Matthew 12:37

What we confess (say, speak) will literally determine if we eat the fruit of life or death.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:10

Based on the above, it is clear that God has exercised his Sovereignty and already determined | judged in principle, which fruits will receive life vs those fruits which will die.

Now we can see how this all connects to Jesus..

The proclamation of the flattering lips and proud tongue was: “with our tongue we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?”

Death at noonday

Jesus is Lord over all. And it is his word that has already judged that all will eat the fruit of their words. One cannot reap life while sowing to death for God will not be mocked.

The tongue with hell fire on it, cannot prevail (have victory), because the tongue speaking death is a defeated tongue. It will be condemned when it rises in judgment! And all judgment is given unto The Son… Jesus (John 5:22), the one whom the tongues of life testify to.

Final thought: be mindful that our lives are a mouthpiece too!
